I have 500 Kindergarten-5th grade students in Kansas. I try to find new and interesting ways to help my students learn using music because it is highly accessible for all students, especially those with physical and cognitive challenges.
Research shows that being able to read music notation can help children become better readers.
It is so much more enjoyable for a child to learn to read music if he/she is able to do so by playing an instrument. Every year I have an instrument “petting zoo” where we sit in a circle and learn how to play the classroom instruments. The students are highly engaged and excited about playing instruments.
My Project
I would like to buy several Remo drums to start a collection that could be used throughout each and every school year, benefiting more than 500 students that pass through my door each week. This collection will help my students to learn how to read music notation while doing something fun, playing instruments.
Your help will make it possible for my students to have a collection of instruments available that will help them learn to read music.
The instruments will be a re-usable tool that will benefit a very large number of students. In ten years, the instruments will be enjoyed by more than 5,000 students!
More than a third of students from low‑income households
