My Students

I am so fortunate to be able to facilitate the learning for 28 incredible students that motivate me to be the very best I can be. They are incredibly diverse in religion, race, ethnicity and socio-economic status. The differences in our classroom are acknowledged and celebrated as we embrace a microcosm of the real world.

My students deserve the best and their pressing desire to change the world with their unique strengths is inspiring.

I am sure it is the recent current events combined with our positive school culture, but this is truly the most promising, empathetic and goal oriented class I have ever seen. They care about each other and know that their peers are their best teachers. They are hardworking and dedicated to learning the importance of listening, debating and using evidence to support theories. The work of my ten-year-olds is unbelievable. I would do anything possible to further their natural gifts as contributing members of society.

This is my 11th year in education. Of all the positions I have had, the classroom has always been my favorite. Every year feels like my first year all over again as I am filled with hope for our future.

My Project

As you know, the world of work is changing by the minute! We are a digital and well-connected community of global citizens and are teaching a whole new generation, preparing them for jobs that have yet to be created! However, as of this minute in 2016, we are still using outdated, traditional and uninspiring supplies and materials to inspire our students to be great collaborators, critical thinkers and authentic problem solvers! I am a firm believer that with a few simple changes, we can adapt the classroom to be inspiring, conducive to collaboration and easily adaptable to the various needs of each and every student.

Traditional student desks were invented in 1880 and yet we still use the same class design 136 years later, despite the drastic differences in the world around us.

My students work in flexible and changing teams every day according to their diverse needs and learning styles. They are constantly lugging desks full of materials from one place in the room to the next as they shift and change according to project, content and skill level. We are very lucky in our grade level to have a new initiative this year of one-to-one technology and every student has a Chromebook to use in class. However, as the students easily adapt to digital learning, the bulky, cumbersome classroom furniture slows us down and makes flexibility with personalized learning difficult. Small groups are sometimes like awkward Holiday family dinners with some children too far from their peers to have a productive, meaningful learning discussions.

It seems so simple, yet my students are beyond excited at the thought of removing the desks and replacing them with tables and caddies that allow flexibility and room for the variety of projects (rather than assigned seating and battling for floor space). Please consider helping.
