My Students
In the city of Newark, many westward students live below the poverty line. Some can not even wear clean clothes to school and are targets for bullies. Some students are teased and chastised because they were showing up to school in unkempt manners. Some of these students were becoming chronic absentees—missing three to five days of school per month—out of shame. We are a Title I school.
During this Covid 19 Pandemic and due to the massive social injustices, removal of racially charged monuments and decline of respectful cultural diversity in society; our Human Rights and NGO Club has set up a state - wide and international effort and virtual outreach to ensure that students are able to be engaged and participate in this international conversation on Racism.
The online platforms and assignments around this human rights issue can and should maintained and supported with the help of reliable online technological platforms such as Webex, Zoom, Google Meetings and You Tube Live.. The virtual and hybrid in person experiences will enrich our students socio- emotional learning and health and wellness.
My Project
These books will help discussions and conversations about racism by reading the books White Fragility: Why It's So Hard for White People to Talk About Racism and This Book Is Anti-Racist: 20 Lessons.
Working Together will bring two diverse schools West Side High School (Newark, NJ) Newton High School (Newton, NJ) together.
Two years , I launched a human rights and NGO Club to help students become community activist and world changers. We visited the United Nations and spoke with some powerful people who are trying to make the world a more humane place for all. We want to learn more about social justice and return back to the United Nations this year.
My students have read the books "Just Mercy" and "I am Malala".
Before we return to the United Nations, I will have my students read about and research key social justices advocates such as Bryan Stevenson and Malala.
We will educate students on human rights issues (especially children’s rights) in the US and around the world, so that students gain a better understanding of the struggles that people may face who are different from them. We will educate students on racism/antiracism. This can be part of an anti-bullying campaign. A special focus can be determined by each respective school based on the needs/population of that school (For example, Newton High School may need to focus on doing a better job connecting with students from Spanish speaking countries). We will connect students with other students from different areas of the US - and the world - (through Google , Webex, or through field trips). West Side’s Human Rights and NGO Club can be a model as they’ve connected with students in other countries this and past years.
