Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
As newly arrived students to our low-income school, my ESL students are struggling to learn both academic vocabulary and everyday English. They're anxious to learn English quickly, often practicing phrases under their breath before they say the phrase aloud.
Many of my students have not had sufficient schooling in their native language, making the transition to a formal American classroom all the more difficult.
The most basic concepts other students have been surrounded by all their lives are new to my ESL students, causing the transition to sometimes be overwhelming.
My Project
I teach all levels of ESL integrated with ELA. My beginner class studies novels and stories at an adapted level and they're eager to learn. Unlike past years, this year my beginner class is composed primarily of non speakers which means when it comes to learning English, we are starting by learning the very basics.
Being unable to communicate their basic needs is causing anxiety.
Having these picture dictionary workbooks will help students learn and practice basic vocabulary and phrases and alleviate their anxieties.
These workbooks coordinate with the bilingual picture dictionaries we already have in the classroom. Students will be able to work independently in their own personal copy of the workbook. They will also be able to work and practice at home.
