My students need electronic balances to do labs that need weighing chemicals and/or lab equipment in our chemistry classes.

My Students
At the start of the school year, I always present this quote to my chemistry students: "NULLIUS in VERBA", translated as "Take nobody's word for it; see for yourself." I would like my chemistry students to experience working like "real chemists" in my classroom by doing laboratory experiments.
My students belong to an urban high school in Northern California with a diverse population of approximately two thousand, 76% of which belong to the socio-economically disadvantaged group.
Almost 95 % of the student population qualifies for free or reduced lunch program. This year, I teach five classes of chemistry. Based on last year’s state standards test scores, 70% of my students are low-level academically, although they are motivated to pursue college after high school.
My students are so enthusiastic to learn chemistry through hands-on activities and laboratory experiments. I also conduct laboratory demonstrations to engage their learning and to model some laboratory techniques, as most of them cannot rely just on reading the laboratory instructions or procedures and following them by themselves.
My Project
Most chemistry concepts are abstract, so to make these concepts more comprehensible to my students, I design lessons that involve them to do hands-on activities and laboratory experiments. Besides, the subject appears to be more real as students self-experience the concepts experimentally.
Although the school provides laboratory equipment and materials, they are not enough to satisfy the needs of all the science classes in our campus. The electronic balances I am requesting from this project will be a big help in allowing my students to do more labs and arriving at more accurate results. It will also save time since they will not wait in line to use the 2 electronic balances I currently use for all the 10-12 groups in each class. By giving them the chance to learn how to use modern laboratory technology such as electronic balances, my students will be more prepared when they take chemistry and other science courses in college.
This project will allow my students to work like 'real chemists' in my classroom.
Having an electronic balance to use in their respective lab stations will save them time when doing lab experiments and give them the opportunity to do more experiments that will practice their skills of doing hands-on science activities. Students doing hands-on science activities remember the material better and feel a sense of accomplishment when the task is completed.
This project will directly impact historically underfunded classrooms.
