Mathematicians look forward to our daily math workshop. We use a variety of tools and resources to help deepen our understanding of math.
"Mathematics is not about numbers, equations, computations, or algorithms: it is about UNDERSTANDING." -William Paul Thurston
My students' natural inquisitiveness takes us down many paths of learning. Whether we're learning about the number operations; geometry and measurement; algebra; or data analysis- our days are full of activity. Students in my room are participants in the learning process. They help make decisions about what we'll learn and the best method for doing so. They are problem-solvers and take pride in the collaborative spirit we've created in our classroom.
My Project
Students use math manipulatives during math workshop to develop computation skills. In our classroom, these tools often include dice and Rekenreks. We use these tools during whole group, small group, and independent work times.
Unlike drill and practice worksheets and flashcards, Rekenreks support even the youngest learners with the visual models they need to discover number relationships and develop automaticity.
We don't have enough materials for all students, so a class set of Rekenreks and additional dice for math stations will help us to achieve our goal of automatizing the basic facts by finding and using patterns and relationships.
