Working Hard for Our Money!

Help me give my students a fun, engaging way to practice their financial literacy by purchasing items in our class store.

My Students

My scholars are in sixth through eight grade. All students are attending a Redesign School in Cleveland, Ohio. Redesign Schools are the lowest 10-15% of schools in the district that call for immediate and dramatic action.

As a teacher in a low-income, high poverty stricken school district, I see my scholars are faced with several challenges both inside and outside of the classroom.

They have entered my classroom far behind grade level and work hard each day to work to close the gap that stands in front of them. All of my scholars, as well as those in the entire school, qualify for the free breakfast and lunch program. In spite of their challenges, my scholars come to school each day with a will to learn and a passion to become better.

My Project

All of my scholars come from low income households and need to build a solid foundation in the lifelong skill of financial literacy. This year they will learn about needs and wants, along with learning to add and subtract money. Learning can be easier to understand when related to real-life issues through examples. I have set up a class system where students will earn money for jobs and bonuses for positive behavior. The money they earn will be used to buy items in our class store. The materials requested will help organize the store and provide some of the inventory.

Essential moments in education are when scholars collaborate with other scholars and apply their learning to real-world applications.

This allows them to progress and can give them incentive to learn and care about what is going on within our classroom.

Scholars will have the opportunity to decide if they want to save up for a big item or buy items as they earn it. Essentially, teaching them saving skills that they can transfer into the real world. They will also decide if they are buying it because they it is a need or if they just want it. They will have experience being the cashier and the consumer in the store. Scholars will work together to decide if they have enough money for the item and what change they will get back.

I am so excited for this hands-on opportunity for my scholars. They truly deserve the experience.
