Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
If you've heard anything about Illinois's state budget this year, it hasn't been good. Cuts have been made in several programs, education not excluded. This affects school budgets and classroom budgets.
I work at a charter school that serves low-income families.
80% of my school's population is on free or reduced price lunch and 100% love learning and coming to school!
My students love their school and love learning. They shouldn't be hurt because of what is happening in Springfield. My students need age appropriate tables to help them do their best. I am eager for a new batch of 28 first graders coming this month!
My Project
Think about when you want to work at a coffee shop. You'll search for the best spot. That's because to do your best work, you need to be comfortable. Sitting at tables that are too high or too wobbly or too small will distract you from your work.
Even for small first graders, comfort and size matters for their working and learning.
My classroom is set up with 28 old desks for my eager 6 years coming this month. These desks are old, large, and some wobbly. The size of the desk limits mobility to help a partner or to rotate stations. Even though these desks can be lowered, they are not made for my students' small bodies. They are made for older students. This is why we desperately need tables at their size.
Tables can promote collaboration with peers at the same table. Tables will free up space so students can move around the room. These tables are made for their size so that it is neither too high or low. With the Illinois state budget crisis, our schools have been hit hard all over the state. We do not have money to update classroom materials that will greatly benefit our students. Please help my first graders tackle their school year in comfort! Please fund our tables!
