My project needs 3 reward toys, a switch activated rooster a cube with pictures of musical instruments which play when the picture is touched and a bell ball for my students who are visually impaired.
The children in my classroom work very hard to accomplish tasks that would be easy for most students. I teach first and second grade children who have severe to profound physical and cognitive challenges.
Although I have basic instructional materials, I need some "sensational toys" with which to reward my students for the extraordinary time and effort they put into learning. I need three "toys" that will both reward my students and reinforce their newly-learned skills.
One is a switch-operated rooster which crows wildly when my students press an adapted switch (cause and effect learning disguised as fun). This skill is very important for my students to master. Since the children are non verbal, activating switches is one way that they will be able to communicate their wants and needs.
The second item is a music cube. As the children press each side of the cube, a different instrument plays a familiar tune. As the children turn the cube, they discover how to create different combinations of instruments. This encourages concentration and introduces them to the wonders of music.
The third item is a large bell ball, a plastic ball with sleigh bells inside. This toy will help my students in several ways. My visually impaired students will learn to follow the sound of the bells and reach out for and eventually be able to catch the ball.
Several of my students have physical limitations. As the ball moves, they will be motivated to move towards the ball, an important step towards independence. For other students, watching the bells move within the ball is very soothing and relaxing.
Thank you for considering my proposal. My students work so hard throughout the day, they deserve to have some fun. Little do they know that these toys have a lot to teach them...but that will remain our secret.
