My Students
I have an amazing opportunity to be a second-grade reading teacher on the Southeast of Chicago. We currently serve K-4 and will be adding one-grade level each year until we are a K-8 school.
We are a high-performing, charter school with a focus on preparing all of our students with the fundamental academic skills and strength of character.
89% of our current scholars qualify for free or reduced-price lunch. All of our scholars live in the Southeast community.
My Project
My students are working extremely hard in reading, math, science, literacy rotations every day. Since we do not have an outdoor space for recess, we have decided to schedule in a choice time block at the end of our day for our students to create and socialize with their peers. In order to have choice time, we need materials and resources to make it fun!
My students love games like Connect Four, Uno, and Tic-Tac-Toe!
Students have personally requested kinetic sand and LEGOs to express their own personal creativity in choice time. We also would love to increase positive incentives in our classroom using literacy rotation heroes. Students would have the opportunity to earn their literacy rotation lanyards or shirts by showing endurance and achievement within their groups.
By increasing positive incentives and giving students time at the end of the day to truly be kids, we hope to shift our classroom culture into not only a high achieving and high academic space, but also include fun and creativity.
