My Project

In our self-contained special education math classes, my students get real-world experience with customer service, handling money and making change, and working in the food business -- right from our classroom!

This is the second year we have had our student-run cafe and it has helped students build confidence when working with customers and making change, nurture relationships with school staff, and get to work on their job skills for after high school!

Students in my class set up and clean up the cafe, take orders, keep the cafe stocked, make specialty drinks and snacks, act as the cashier to make change for customers (staff members), and deliver drinks to classrooms. One of our best baristas is currently using the skills she has gained from the Wildcat Cafe to work at a local coffee shop!

By having the refrigerator in our classroom, we will be able to have all the items we need, such as milk, whipped cream, cold foam, etc., on-hand and easily accessible. We will also be able to store frozen foods like breakfast sandwiches that will be prepared in the microwave. This will allow us to offer a variety of snacks and broaden the work experience students are getting. By having a blender we will be able to create a wider range of drinks! We plan on making frappe-type beverages and possibly even smoothies! The aprons really give the cafe a real-world feel and help identify students in the building as cafe workers when they go to make deliveries.

My students love the cafe and we have seen so much growth in their people and money skills from it. Thank you for supporting the Wildcat Cafe!
