My Project

Q: What makes your students special?

A: My name is Lisa Villano, and I am a 7th grade resource teacher at Ryan Middle School in Fairbanks, Alaska.

What makes my students special is their diverse experiences and gifts. Among my students are writers, engineers, dancers, actors, athletes, designers, and more. This leads to a wealth of knowledge and abilities in my room

Q: How will the specific items you’re requesting make a difference in their learning?

A: Research has shown that the COVID-19 pandemic has been detrimental to language acquisition in students. Students without exceptionalities experiences, on average, a one-year delay in literacy learning. My students are exceptional learners, and all have at least an Individualized Education Plan. I noticed last year that my students lagged at least two years behind their grade-level peers in English Language Arts, including vocabulary acquisition.

I'm particularly excited for the Intermediate Visual Dictionaries and the the Roget's Thesaurus because they will help increase students' vocabulary, promote comprehension, and enhance their writing abilities.

I plan to use the Daily Word Ladder and the Week-By-Week Phonics & Word Study Activities for the Intermediate Grades as classroom warmup. This is to help increase vocabulary understanding with word studies, word families and word origins.

The games (Taboo and Boggle) will be used to enrich the vocabulary lessons and embed the words and skills into the students' arsenal of vocabulary skills.

Q: What are the goals for this project?

A: To fill in the vocabulary gaps created by COVID-19.
