Ever pick up a book that you wanted to read but struggled to understand because you didn't know the vocabulary? This is a constant challenge for my 11th graders who are struggling to read grade-level texts and prepare for success in college.
My students are energetic and motivated 11th graders who attend high school in a high needs, urban area of New York.
Our school is geared towards meeting the needs of all learners while preparing them for college. Most of my students are the first in their families to graduate from high school and go on to college. They are hard working, intelligent students who are seeking a strong education to prepare them for higher education. Yet, our school has little money to support the high needs of all of our students.
My Project
My students love to read but they often struggle with more complex vocabulary which inhibits their understanding. They want to read books that will prepare them for AP English as well as college but at times the vocabulary makes it difficult for them to fully understand the text. These 26 new vocabulary books will enable my students to develop stronger and more complex vocabularies that will not only allow them to further their reading comprehension and writing skills but prepare them for the SAT. In order to move on to college, students need a strong background in reading and writing as well as high scores on the SAT.
Please support my students and our initiative to improve their academic vocabulary so that they will not only find success on the SAT, a key component in continuing their education, but also in learning to love more complex works of literature and further development of their writing.
