Words That Heal: Supporting Spanish Education for School Nursing

My Project

As a school nurse, learning Spanish for healthcare professionals is highly valuable for several key reasons.

Many schools have Spanish-speaking students and families with limited English proficiency.

Better communication with students and families is the most important reason for taking this course. Being able to speak even basic medical Spanish will help me to take accurate health histories, explain treatments or procedures, and provide emotional reassurance to students in distress.

Learning the basic medical Spanish will also improve care and safety by preventing miscommunications that can lead to misunderstandings about allergies, medications, or symptoms. Knowing Spanish reduces the risk of errors and ensures students receive proper care quickly.

Lastly, learning medical Spanish can help build trust and ensure feelings of inclusion. Families are more likely to engage with the school and follow health recommendations if they feel understood and respected. It shows cultural sensitivity and strengthens community relationships. Public schools are required to provide meaningful access to services for non-English-speaking families.

Speaking Spanish helps me to meet Title VI and ADA communication standards more effectively.

Professional growth has always been important to me. Learning medical Spanish enhances my abilities as a medical provider for the children that I serve everyday.
