Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
Our charter academy is a diamond in the rough. We are located in Los Angeles, California and serve 361 students. Our students are predominately Hispanic, coming from challenging home lives, and we are a low-income/high poverty district, (98% of our student population are eligible for free or reduced-price lunch). Although our students and their families face many challenges, we have built an extremely close community that goes far beyond the scope of a typical school. The parents are happy to contribute to the learning community in any way they can, and are actively involved in the education of their children, even though many are balancing multiple jobs. Our students come to school proud to be ICEF Scholars and are committed to success. I feel that it is my duty to ignite a love for learning in my students and to create lifelong learners.
My Project
My students have grown up in a "throw away" world, where everything is individually wrapped and disposable. Last year, we successfully started a recycling program at our school, which has had a monumental impact on reducing waste and raising awareness about human impact on the world and sustainable living. Unfortunately, most students (and many adults) don't think twice about the amount of waste they produce.
As we began studying human impact on the environment, my students have become increasingly interested in ways they can make a positive difference in the world.
The families of my students do not have the resources to purchase reusable water bottles for their children, and so I am asking for your help. Most of the students in my class come to school with plastic water bottles, many of which have been frozen, which can leak harmful chemicals from the plastic into the water they drink. High-quality reusable water bottles will provide my students with an essential resource to support their health and wellbeing, as well as the health and wellbeing of our Earth.
