Help me give my students the love of words! I want my students to recognize, read and write words. To build their knowledge of new sight words will help my ELL students to become stronger readers.
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
My young students are kindergarten age. They are fun, energetic, and curious 5 to 6 year-olds. My students are ready to learn about math, reading, and writing. My students are eager to learn math facts, and how to be a good reader and writer.
We like to draw and write in our writing journals, and our teachers help us to write complete sentences.
It is exciting to be an author and an illustrator. We are also learning how to add and subtract, use a ten-frame, and count on a number-line. The supplies we need will help to stock up our reading, writing, and math centers. Who knows? Maybe we might have a famous author, illustrator, or the next math genesis in our class!
My Project
The materials will help my Kindergarten ELL students to move beyond the word wall. The sight word center materials will help my students to identify, read and eventually write words using sentences. I want to give my students hands on learning experiences with weekly sight words. The experience will allow my students to learn sight words in a fun, creative, positive environment.
I believe it is not enough to post sight words on a bulletin board.
My students need to use these new words daily during their word work centers. Once my students learn their sight words; they are ready for the next steps of reading and writing sight words. Learning sight words becomes the building block to reading and writing in kindergarten. I want to give my Kindergarteners the ability to recognize, read & write 100 sight words before the end of Kindergarten.
I believe setting goals and helping my students learn five new words a week is a critical process in becoming a proficient reader and writer before entering first grade. I believe all students have the potential to learn sight words and become confident readers and writers.
