Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
One area that my students struggle in is increasing their vocabulary and phonemic awareness. My biggest challenge in having them meeting grade level standards is supplying them with enough materials and engaging activities to help them reach their goals.
I teach third grade in a school in the Bronx.
I have students who have special needs, are English Language Learners, are new to this country and who live in shelters. Most of my students are visual learners and learn best by doing hands-on activities versus workbooks or being lectured. My students' vocabulary is very limited which greatly impacts their Reading and Writing scores, which are below grade level standards. They are eager to learn and willing to try new things to help them succeed.
My Project
Most of these items will be used in our Word Study Center. The wipe-off plastic covers and wipe-off markers will be used to play word study games. They will be learning new vocabulary words and their meanings. They will also be learning new spelling patterns and how they can incorporate these spelling patterns into their writing and to help them spell new words. With the plastic covers, students can use the activities over and over again and can be used for years to come. The ink stamps will be used to motivate and praise students when they have done their word study homework or classwork. The 3rd Grade Common Core Standards will be placed around the classroom as a reminder as to what our goals are in each subject and what we will be working on daily in our class.
This project will help students increase their vocabulary skills and work on decoding skills by studying new spelling patterns.
The materials in this project will also motivate the students to learn and stay focused on the standards for 3rd grade. Students who have a vast vocabulary can achieve higher reading and writing levels. Confucius once said, "Words are the voice of the heart." We want to teach to a generation of students who will have a voice and a heart by teaching them new words.
