My students need wordless picture books to provide opportunity for literacy-rich conversations.
FULLY FUNDED! Mrs. Wolfe's classroom raised $331

My Students
Our school is in a rural community, in South Carolina, where tradition is thick and families depend on one another. We are a Title 1 school. Ninety-two percent of our students are on free or reduced lunch plans. Students in our school are considered at risk of failure and live at or near poverty level. I have students from many different races, religions, and academic levels. Their interests are just as diverse! They are full of personality and are just beginning to discover that they can make a difference in their world!
My Project
Wordless picture books are books whose story is told completely through illustrations. Students have to "listen" to the illustrations and create their own words to describe what is happened. They have to use their imaginations. They have to THINK!
We will use these books to encourage students to "read" the pictures closely and pay attention to the details - character's faces, setting, use of colors, etc.
We will also use them to promote literacy-rich conversations through guided small groups or partner work. Finally, we will move students from talking about what they see to writing down their own version of the story - encouraging them to "paint a picture" with their words.
Nearly all students from low‑income households
