Wordless Books for Literary Analysis

Help me give my students wordless books that make reading less threatening. Sophisticated texts like Staake's "Bluebird" and Lee's "Mirror" allow all students, including English language learners, to engage with complex literary analysis of plot, character, and theme.

My Students

My students are an astonishing mix. In our class, variation is the rule. As a comprehensive urban high school, Junior English student skills range from college-ready to eight years below grade level. About a third speak a language other than English in their homes. Classes serve a mix of racial backgrounds, including more than a third Latinx. There are significant Native American, African American, and Pacific Islander student populations. One quarter of students are eligible for free and reduced-price lunch programs. LGBTQIA+ students are visible across and among the aforementioned groups.

What all my students share is a strong need for greater access to books that reflect their interests and abilities.

My Project

These wordless books will help older students engage with challenging literary analysis without the frustrating obstacles of word-driven text. In small groups, all students - whatever their comfort with reading - will be able to read, discuss and interpret these books as a common starting point.

Currently, my students have access to one wordless book that we read as a whole class.

I have seen the enthusiasm and engagement this fosters, and would like to build on this in a small-group format. The books in this project will allow students to read engaging, surprising stories, discuss them together, and write cogent, literate responses.
