My Students
5 and 6 year olds want to explore spelling and writing! My students LOVE to try out new word patterns and phonics skills without the permanence of writing in a journal or on paper. Students create Thinking Maps on non-permanent writing mediums to practice words and use critical thinking skill
We are Jammin' Geniuses and we're the kindergarten rage!
I have 30 students in a full-day public school in California. They are a diverse group representing cultures from four continents, 13 countries and several languages. They are also diverse in their demographic backgrounds. Many of my students have parents who are English language learners and are challenged with modeling spoken and written English for their children. Although most of my students speak English effectively, they are learning to read and write using correct word order and phonics. The biggest hurdle is meeting the needs of all 30 students by providing timely feedback to them within a lesson so that learning can take place.
My Project
As we explore reading and writing, my students feel intimidated about trying out their English language skills when they have to write on paper; but they are enthusiastic and productive when they can demonstrate and practice learning on white boards and other non-permanent media. They use graphic organizers to practice high frequency words and word patterns, write sentences, and work collaboratively with partners to become better readers and writers.
White boards and magic boards also provide non-threatening feedback to me as students can record an answer and show it to me and if its incorrect, they can easily make an adjustment without the trouble of erasing. And what child doesn't love to use a marker and an whiteboard eraser? Having a class set of these materials will improve the my students' reading fluency, writing, and will provide me with the opportunity to get feedback from the whole class without having to walk around to each desk.
With the ability to respond to prompts via a white board or magic board, I will be able to immediately assess students' understanding of concepts.
I can quickly modify my lessons to address the gaps and needs of my students if I have a class set of these materials. I can also encourage independent practice of word work skills and collaboration of students to solve language arts challenges.
