Word Wizards

My students need 24 binders each and 1 electric hole punch.

This project is fully funded

I teach 2nd grade in a high poverty elementary school in an urban area in Maryland. Many of my students come from troubled homes and/or they live with extended family. Because of this, I usually try to provide all the materials and supplies they need at school.

I used 3 ring binders last school year for our Word Wizard Dictionaries and my students loved using them. Last year I purchased them out of my pocket but I was unable to do so this school year.

Students will use their 3 ring binders to create personal picture dictionaries aka WORD WIZARD DICTIONARIES. Each week students will add reading selection vocabulary words, a definition, a student created sentence using the word, and a picture of each word. Because we have to add pages as needed, we have to continuously punch holes. An electric hole punch will allow us to do this more quickly. At the end of the year, students will have over 400 words in their personal Word Wizard dictionaries!

Vocabulary is key to reading comprehension. Students will increase their often limited vocabulary that they bring to school by over 400 words just by using their Word Wizard (personal) picture dictionaries!
