Word Wizards Need Dictionaries!

My students need a class set (35) dictionaries.

I teach 9th grade English 1 at a high-needs high school in northeast Baltimore City. The school is extremely under-funded and lacking basic classroom resources, including classroom sets of books that are necessary for an English classroom.

Students are eager to learn, but they lack many essential reading skills that they need in order to master the content in a 9th grade English class. The average reading level in every class is around 6th grade, which means that my students are an average of 2-3 years behind in English. Many of their problems with comprehension are directly to related to a deficiency of vocabulary knowledge. If they expand their vocabularies and their knowledge of words, they will be able to understand significantly more of what they read.

Students need to be able to use their own copy of a dictionary in class without having to share with a group. A dictionary is the most basic tool in an English classroom, and it is absolutely essential and valuable. A class set of dictionaries for the classroom would enable students to look up unfamiliar words in their readings during class time. Students will be more likely to remember the definitions of the words that they look up themselves; the words whose definitions they are told by the teacher are a classmate they are likely to forget. Also, students would be able to check out a dictionary to take home and use to complete their reading homework assignments. From an English teacher's perspective, having dictionaries would enable me to teach students significantly more of the vocabulary that they absolutely need to learn in order to improve their reading comprehension.
