Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

I work at a Title I School. Most of our students are from low income families which is reflected by our 89% free or reduced price lunch status. The community is made up of primarily Spanish speaking families. This is apparent in our 83% Hispanic demographic. The majority of our kids are English language learners. Although many face socio-economic challenges, they come to school every day willing to learn.

Who are my students?

Well that’s a question I typically answer with – “every child I’ve had the pleasure of making an academic impact on.” I have 35 curious 8 year-old students in my third grade class and I live in a tight community where when I stop by the market down the street, I will most likely bump into a family I know. Most of the children come from immigrant families who value education greatly. Most are from households who have two hard working parents who do their best to provide the best quality of life for their children. I have been blessed with the opportunity to give their child the best education I possibly can, and I have no intentions of giving anything less.

My Project

The books I have selected are books that are ready to use and the type of books that will be used every day. We all have our go-to books, you know the ones, marked with highlighter, sticky notes hanging out, and tattered pages. These books that I have selected are those kind of books. Books that teachers can't live without. Books that will help my English Language Learners that have entered my classroom since the Hurricanes Irma and Maria.

After Hurricanes Irma, Harvey, and Maria, many families from Hurricane-ravaged Caribbean countries, especially Puerto Rico, have migrated to my high-Hispanic/ELL population school, staying with relatives and loved ones as they transition to the US fleeing the aftermath.

These students need heavy instruction in the areas of word study in order to become proficient in speaking, reading, and writing the English language. These books will help me in the instruction of ELL students. Thank you for helping me make all of my students successful learners for life.
