This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
Word problems are one of the most difficult skills to master in math on any level. In fourth grade for New York State, students are required to master 33 different types of word problems in preparation for the state exam. Solving these problems is not a one-step practice, it requires several steps.
Our students live in the Bronx and attend a public school in a low socioeconomic area.
Over half of our school population is classified in special education. Our general education and co-teaching classrooms can go up to as many as 32 students in one class. These students require several attempts and re-teachings in order to succeed in school, more specifically, when solving a difficult task such as word problems.
My Project
Gaining these resources will help our students practice solving these word problems and master the necessary skills to succeed. Our school recently ran out of paper supply and now the teachers must provide paper for copies. Copies can include daily tasks, homework, and assessments. Since we are required to teach 33 word problems for all students, supplies like paper and labels are crucial to our success. Our goal is to print the word problems on the labels and stick each one on a separate paper for students to solve. This would allow time for students to work independently on a problem and review the answer as a class.
Our state exam is 5 months away and the clock is ticking.
Receiving this donation would help us better prepare our students for success. Having these supplies would also help build the students' confidence because the more practice they receive on this specific type of work, the more certain they will feel completing this type of work.
