My students attend a Title I school in a high needs area where they receive free breakfast and lunch each day. Many of these students live in poverty. My 4th grade class consists of general education students, students with disabilities, and English language learners. Many of these students only have the books we provide for them at school and do not receive any help outside of school. They come from families that do not speak English.
Fund this project and my students will have the resources they need to build their vocabulary and continue to become words nerds!
My Project
The students in my class are learning many new vocabulary words this year in all academic areas, and as students with disabilities, English language learners, and being just 9 and 10 years old, they need help! The students in my class have been creating a visual model each time they learn a new word. This model includes the word, it's definition, synonyms, antonyms, a picture, and a sentence. They would benefit from having multiple thesauruses in the classroom to find synonyms and antonyms when they cannot think of any on their own.
Research has shown that when students learn words, they build patterns and networks of meaning called word schemas.
Students make connections to their own knowledge as well as their knowledge of prefixes, suffixes, root words, and synonyms and antonyms when deciding what new words mean.
