This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Upward and onward! My high school juniors (many of whom will be first generation college student), are preparing for the SAT in an effort to be accepted into a four year university. One of the challenges we uncovered during our practice with the PSAT was that the vocabulary was difficult and unfamiliar, making many of the questions unanswerable for the students.
Many of my students do not have access to a dictionary at home and so far (due to the extreme budget crisis), we have been unable to secure any dictionaries beyond the soft cover books I have picked up at a local dollar store.
To ready for the SAT which my students will take next fall, I will be coaching my students through Barron's "1100 Words You Need To Know". Many of the practice in the workbook requires access to a dictionary for a definition or clarification of word meaning, which is why I have requested the class set of dictionaries. The thesauri will be an additional support as we practice writing essays for the exam.
You too can make a difference in a motivated student's life! These kids have the motivation and perseverance to get to college if given the right support. Please help me in making college-going dreams come true for students and their families.
