My students are imaginative and resilient kids. They come from low-income households and depend upon our school to help them meet their daily, basic needs. During this time of “distance learning and quarantine,” parents and guardians of my students look to their school for resources such as food, learning tools, and coping methods.
Most of my students have special needs (learning disabilities, cognitive disabilities, and/or emotional disabilities) and have difficulty accessing the online learning sessions and worksheet packets provided by our school district without having to modify the work to meet their needs.
Despite the hardships they are facing, my students and their families are eager to learn and are staying positive.
My Project
Distance learning is so different from regular school. I miss my students! I would like to supply them with two games they can use during this time and over the summer to increase their vocabulary while having fun. My students learn through using nontraditional methods that incorporate the use of manipulatives. By increasing their vocabulary and spelling skills, it will better enable them to read and write at grade level.
Games are an excellent way to “up” language learning by making it engaging and entertaining.
During this time of distance learning and quarantine, playing games with household members will not only help academically, but will teach my students about teamwork, patience, and how to win and lose gracefully.
