Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
Every morning I watch 18 passionate kindergarten students stroll through my classroom door with huge smiles on their faces. They are ready to learn. Their compassion towards each other, thirst to learn new things, and willingness to help others make my classroom environment ideal.
Our school consists of almost 1,000 students that represent 26 different languages.
Our diverse school is full of students who are eager and wanting to learn. The majority of my students live in homes that English is not spoken at all. The only chance at learning English is within our school walls. I incorporate lots of hands-on activities as well as lots of opportunities for students to speak in their first and second language. All of my students are extremely eager to strengthen their English language skills. Unfortunately, I am limited when it comes to the resources I currently have in my classroom for them to practice these skills.
My Project
The phonics, phonemic awareness and writing center materials will allow my students to be further immersed in the English language culture which they are a part of. This extra practice in vocabulary, phonemic awareness, and phonics will help them strengthen their oral, writing and reading skills. The materials will be used for whole group, small group and center time. My students are on varying academic levels, so having all three programs will allow me to differentiate based on their individual needs.
These necessary skills will allow lots of differentiated opportunities to practice these necessary skills throughout the school day during structured and unstructured times.
This will also allow my students to gain more confidence when speaking orally to their friends and other teachers.
