My students need instruments and supplies, such as a flute, trumpet, clarinet, trombone, reeds, and instruction books, so they can be the leaders in a new school band and prepare for high school opportunities.

My Students

"For me music is a vehicle to bring our pain to the surface, getting it back to that humble and tender spot where, with luck, it can lose its anger and become compassion again." - Paula Cole. My students escape from their surrounding reality by using music as a tool of self expression.

First and foremost my students are compassionate and dedicated.

They deserve much more then their neighborhood offers. Our students come from a very impoverished neighborhood and have found music to be a great outlet. When our students give it their all their spirits come out, giving us all chills when they perform in their choir or when their knowledge is tested in the classroom. Their enthusiasm is endless and they truly follow the mantra of being an explorer. These students have been in music class with me for 2 years and have learned instrument responsibility through our recorder program. The expectations are set high but they are always exceeded by our students.

My Project

The flute, trumpet, clarinet, and trombone, instruction books, and other materials will be used in an after school band program currently open for 5th-7th graders, aimed at keeping kids off the streets and further expanding their knowledge of what is available to them. Many of our kids look at high school as a means of escaping the poor neighborhood schools surrounding them, being in this school band gives our kids a leg up on that process. The launching of this program is something that won't just benefit us this year but it will continue as an integral part of our after school and music programs for many years to come. Every student in the program will learn their chosen concert band instrument and will also play as an ensemble two times a week for the duration of the school year. The program will help them improve their music reading skills, prepare them for high school band and will also boost their confidence by performing in two concerts for the community.

Please help these wonderful 5th-7th grade students at our inner city school.

They have all the passion they can handle and just need the tools to soar. We currently do not have a band program, not due to lack of interest, rather lack of funding. Our school simply can't afford to pay for the instruments and materials. Their parents are supporting their children in their decision to join band and are eager to help their kids achieve greatness.
