Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Project
At our middle school, we use a program called PBIS (positive behavior interventions and supports). Through this system students can earn a digital currency called Mav Bucks when they are recognized for proactively demonstrating our campus-wide expectations: being safe, being respectful, and/or being productive. Teachers can set up classroom PBIS stores where students can spend their Mav Bucks. In my band room's PBIS store, I make reeds, clarinet cleaning swabs, and pencils available for students to purchase. Over the past year, this program has been so successful that my inventory of reeds has become critically depleted.
Additionally, through regular use reeds wear out and need replacing every 1 to 2 weeks, which can get pretty expensive for clarinetists, saxophonists, oboists, and bassoonists.
By funding this project, students will have a way of using their appropriate behavior to connect themselves with necessary materials for class without incurring a financial expense that not every family can afford. Thus, assisting our program in closing the opportunity gap and facilitating our students' success.
