Woodblock Printing, Japanese Culture

My students need materials that support the cultural arts: Looms, Sumi paintings and block printing.

My Students

In a typical day you will see my students creating woodblock prints from foam plates, weaving using old wooden picture frames and creating murals. Students ask to spend their free time in the art room, what they need now is better supplies to continue to challenge them.

Our school has a wonderfully diverse culture and student population - this year I taught students from India, Turkey, Egypt, Korea, England, Chile, Paraguay, Mexico and that is just the top of the list.

My students look forward to receiving a solid education in America. They are eager to create and learn about other cultures, share about their own and push themselves beyond what they thought were their artistic limits. It is my job every year to make our Art program better and better and that means broader projects and better supplies. By using authentic materials we increase the value of the projects and therefore accurately lead students to understand their cultural value.

My Project

All middle school students receive Art for 1 quarter a year. This past year the 7th & 8th grade students worked with Rice paper to create scrolls, papyrus to create Egyptian artworks, clay to make coil pots and wove yarn on hand made looms. These supplies will keep these art projects going and will give them a closer level of authenticity as well. The block printing will support the Asian art unit, looms for Native peoples and in class educational resources to support this learning.

By adding better quality supplies and tools to the classroom my students gain a deeper understanding and appreciation of other cultures and how they create art.

Middle school students benefit from the cross-curriculum in History and art.
