Peek into my classroom and you will find small groups of high school students donning safety glasses, carpenter's pencils tucked behind ears, tape measures clipped to belts and huge smiles on their faces as they concentrate on their current project. They look forward to spending two hours in this non-traditional class where they can be out of their seats moving around with hands-on learning. As the first female trades teacher in our district, I'm excited to open this opportunity up to all students and am especially excited to help young women feel comfortable and confident learning construction skills.
Construction class creates an avenue for my students to explore careers in STEM, promotes independence, and allows students to earn national credentials in construction.
For over twenty years, I have taught special education and science. As the construction teacher, I am beyond excited that I get to combine my love of woodwork with my love of teaching. I look forward to each and every moment with my students!
My Project
As my students have begun to improve their woodturning skills, they are asking to branch out to more complex projects. They have thumbed through magazines and browsed the internet for ideas that inspire them.
With the materials from this project, my students will learn more difficult skill sets on the wood lathe, allowing them to develop their skills further and create beautiful projects they can proudly take home to their families.
As they collaborate on these new projects, my students will also continue to hone their skills with many power and hand tools, such as a wood lathe, compass, tape measure, drill press, band saw, miter saw, and disc sander.
By supporting Wood Lathe Wishes, you are equipping a student with many fantastic life skills and enabling their creative juices to flow.
