My Project
My students attend a public Pre-K through 8th-grade Montessori school. Our school is comprised of students from all over our city, which has one of the highest poverty rates in the nation. Our Montessori students follow a child-centered approach to develop each child physically, socially, emotionally, and cognitively. Students learn in multi-age classrooms and remain with the same teacher for several years. My classroom is a STEAM lab and maker space, where each student spends at least eight weeks using technology and other building materials to create.
Students have learned to use Canva and Silhouette Design Studio to create their own graphic designs for the laser cutter.
Having a selection of wood is necessary for any maker space. Students are able to create a digital design, and then cut them with the laser. We are completely out of wood for the kids to use for projects. We need these basic supplies to allow students to continue to grow as makers and strengthen their digital skills.
Nearly all students from low‑income households
