As a teacher in a low-income, Title 1 school, my students rarely have access to new materials. Our textbooks are very old and outdated.
Using this novel, wonder, students are able to connect with Auggie, the 5th-grade student in the text, to learn not only the typical 5th-grade state standards but how to be a friend, and how to empathize with people with disabilities.
They will be able to physically hold the book and read through the chapter book with the rest of their class. Because we are low-income, our library doesn't always have enough books for an entire class set and students have to read the book from a PDF on their computer. Using this project they will be able to have the book and read it the same way I do, and we will finish the book together.
