Wondering About Our World Through Exploring & Nature Journaling
Help me give my students the tools we need to explore the world around us with a wagon to carry our supplies, magnifying glasses to get a closer look and colored pencils to journal what we see.

My Students
My second-grade students are creative, curious boys and girls who love to play and imagine. At such a young age, they are still so excited to learn about the world around them. For many of my students, school is where they come to feel loved and supported. We are a rural school with a high population of low-income students. Many of the students have families that are struggling both financially and personally. My classroom is a full-inclusion classroom and several children have special needs. It is my goal that our classroom will be a place where each child is seen and heard and know that they are a valued part of a community.
My Project
My hope this year is that my students will develop a sense of wonder and curiosity in the world around them. Our school is located in a unique area that has all sorts of natural environments and habitats to explore, as well as many areas of historical interest. We are within walking distance of many trails, as well as a historic gold town that is now a state park. I take my students walking at least once a month to explore both the natural and historical elements of our local area and I would like to add in nature journaling as a way to record our learning.
The benefits of walking each month and exploring our local area are many.
My students will be out in the world together, walking, talking and many days, with the help of a wagon to carry our lunches, sitting and eating outside. We will be observing, wondering about and noticing our local plants, trees and occasionally wildlife and hopefully, we will be able to get a closer look with our magnifying glasses. We will also have the opportunity to visit the historic mining town and learn about how our area came to be and how children in our area lived long ago. With our colored pencils and our nature journals, we will be able to keep a record of what we see and observe, as well as any questions we have and what we hope to learn more about.
My sweet 2nd graders love being outside and exploring their world. Please help me help them to become people that have a lifelong habit of taking the time to observe, wonder about and keep a record of what they see in the world around them. I believe it could change their lives forever.
