My Students

Our school is nestled in a small town in North Carolina. We are a community Title I school with about 450 students and have a growing ESL population. Students at our school love learning and take pride in being a CHAMP Cougar!

Our first graders are amazing risk takers who love to learn.

Speaking, listening, reading, and writing are the foundational building blocks on which all other learning is built. To provide instruction in a meaningful way we use a variety of resources, including rigorous text discussions, accountable talk, small group reading instruction, book clubs and whole group mini-lessons that focus on Common Core standards. Considering that our physical building is over 40 years old and the curriculum is constantly changing, some of our materials are out of date and our basic supplies are in high demand. Students in first grade grow by leaps and bounds, both personally and academically.

My Project

These materials will help my students be successful during writing workshop, as well as during the rest of the day. During the writing process students plan, draft, revise, edit, and publish using small booklets and special colored pens. Using felt tips pens allows the students to feel like "real" authors. The pens also prohibit students from erasing and allow them to produce more writing on the page. Having a special writing folder helps students stay organized. All of these materials assist my students with their writing, which encourages and improves their overall literacy skills.

The boys and girls in my class are eager to write each day, especially because they have amazing materials that make them believe they are "real" authors.
