I teach 31 low-income five-year-old kindergartners and first graders in a split grade-level classroom. All of the students who attend my school receive free breakfast and lunch on a daily basis. The students I work with are exposed to extreme amounts of violence, and several have families who are unable to support them financially.
My students lack the materials they need to be successful in the classroom, especially with our school district's tight budget.
Though a majority of students come to school without supplies and materials, they come to school eager to learn. I spend a large amount of time planning instruction to meet each of their individual needs. My students appreciate every donation our classroom receives and everything that comes into our classroom is utilized to its full potential. The donations we receive make a huge, positive impact on their education.
My Project
In kindergarten, we practice writing on a daily basis. Students participate in mini-lessons prior to writing that is focused on the skill they will be working on for that day. The students also set daily writing goals for themselves to encourage goal setting at a young age.
My students would greatly benefit from having writing journals to keep their writing together in one place.
Students right now are using loose leaf paper which makes it difficult for them to use because the writing lines are too thin. The writing journals would also be beneficial for the kindergarten students because there is an area in the journals requested for children to illustrate their writing. Students would be able to look back at past writing if they had writing journals to continue previous writing or add more details to current pieces. My students greatly appreciate every donation that is received. Thank you for making a difference in the lives of my students!
