My Students

My class is full of energetic, eager, and inquisitive 8 to 9 year old kids. Learning is something that my 3rd graders love to do. They are kind, compassionate, and helpful. Every day, I am tasked with teaching students ranging from Kindergarten to 3rd grade reading levels, which makes meeting each of their individual needs challenging.

Our school is located on the south side of Chicago in the Back of the Yards neighborhood.

Unfortunately, some of them have had experiences that no child should have to live through. 100% of my students are on free or reduced lunch, and yet they are rich with spirit in spite of the challenges they face. It is my goal to provide them with the high quality education that they deserve.

My Project

Third grade is an important year. My students will be spending much more time working independently during guided reading and I want to make that time both meaningful and fun. Also, I want my students to become both better readers and better people. Wonder is an amazing text that will teach students to empathize with and appreciate people who may have obvious differences from themselves. My students will each be given their own copy of the text along with thought-provoking written response prompts that will push them as readers, while also causing them to reflect on their own daily interactions and experiences.
