This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I am an elementary music teacher in a dangerous and economically-depressed urban neighborhood in New York. The neighborhood is plagued by crime, gang violence, and the difficult social issues that accompany teaching in an impoverished area.
I consciously came to teach at my elementary school, because I wanted to make a difference with students who really needed it. I wanted to contribute my time & talents to communities that are often passed up by good teachers, because the circumstances and environment are not desirable.
I wanted to help uplift this community of young people by encouraging them to dream big, teaching them goal setting & critical thinking skills and providing them with a rigorous and meaningful education.
My beautiful & talented students come from Mexico, the Dominican Republic, Puerto Rico, the Caribbean, Poland, Yemen & the US. They are all bursting with potential, but need extra help in mathematics.
During my time, I have created an After-School Chorus and a general music program for the elementary school. Although I am the music teacher, I also teach 7 academic intervention periods to 2nd graders. I am helping my students increase their math knowledge and sharpen their math skills. We are working on subtraction, addition, money knowledge, number recognition, and problem-solving.
I need about 7 different math learning kits that provide hands-on-learning materials and activities. Using these materials will cater to the various learning styles of my students and give me the tools necessary to teach.
As a donor, you can provide the necessary materials to help me execute effective teaching. By funding this project, you will increase student learning.
