This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

Youth mental health is currently in a state of crisis. Our school is located at Central Juvenile Hall in Los Angeles County. My students have many stressors from their court cases to family instability, gang involvement, poverty, interpersonal relationships, and lack of positive coping strategies.

The Wellness Center will allow students who are feeling stressed or emotionally dysregulated to practice self-regulation and coping skills so that they can return to learning with minimal disruption to themselves or others.

This space will be used to allow students to address their current mental state in a safe space. This will prevent further distress that may manifest as negative behaviors, inability to focus on learning, or more acute challenges.

In an effort to create this much needed space I am asking for comfortable seating and furniture to replicate a home like setting that allows the students to feel like they are not in jail. I am also asking for parenting books to help students gain skills to raise their own children. Students having access to the Wellness Center and mental health will help in improving student’s sense of safety and well-being as well as breaking down the stigma that surrounds mental health services.
