My Students
My 4th grade class is a unique one that includes general education students and special education students who are working on social and emotional goals. All of my students have just gone months with remote only learning and are now entering a new phase of blended learning, where we will be partly in the classroom and partly learning from home. My students will be learning both academic skills, like how to write a realistic fiction story and how to multiply two-digit numbers, and social-emotional skills, like how to be resilient during this pandemic and how to be a good friend.
We have many low-income families in our class and want to make sure all of our students have the tools they need to learn both in school and at home this school year!
Our school's number one priority this year is the psychological well-being of our children, and we hope to build academic skills upon that foundation. We need some different learning tools this year to be successful and to build a classroom community while some of us are in school and some are at home.
My Project
These mini dry erase boards will be a useful tool for my students in my blended learning class, both when they learning from the school building and when they are learning at home!
Two big challenges with remote learning are assessing student math learning and building community, and these little boards will help us overcome them.
In fourth grade, students learn complicated algorithms like multiplying multi-digit numbers, long division, and adding and subtracting fractions. It is extremely challenging to type these things on a computer, but when students write it boldly on a mini whiteboard and hold it up to the camera, I as their teacher can see clearly whether they understand how to solve the problem or what they still need to work on. Students also enjoy using the markers and whiteboard and are more motivated to do their math!
Mini whiteboards can also be helpful tools for building community. They are useful when playing group games that give students the social interaction that they sorely need after being away from each other for so long. Students can use the boards to play games like Pictionary and other activities involving drawing or writing. My students and I are ready to take on the challenge of this year, and with your support, we can make this unusual year a great one for both learning and socialization! Thank you!
