This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
Do you remember a book you had to keep reading because you didn't want to put it down? Do you remember a book that made you say, "Wow!". Do you remember a book you couldn't stop talking about because you thought everyone needed to read it? Wonder was that book for me. My students NEED to read it!
I teach a dynamic group of 5th graders who come to school each day to build a better future for themselves.
Over 90% of the students in our Title 1 school receive free or reduced lunch, and over 25% of them are English language learners. Our school strives to have a "No Excuses" attitude when it comes to preparing our students for successful futures. We utilize technology throughout instruction, and incorporate character education and college readiness in all we do. My students are destined for success, and I will do whatever it takes to prepare them for that!
My Project
My first read aloud of the school year will be Wonder by R.J. Palacio. We will read it to appreciate it as a wonderful piece of literature. We will utilize it to learn and practice reading skills. We will explore writing techniques employed by the author. We will analyze language usage through the book.
Perhaps more importantly, it will kick-off our year long focus on character education. Through this beautifully written story, we will be able to discuss friendship, getting along, and bullying issues. Modeling after Mr. Browne's use of precepts, students will be asked to reflect and think about who they are, what they believe, and what they stand for.
This small book holds such big things for all who read it...I want my students to experience that!
I am so excited to share this inspiring book with my students.
I can read aloud from my single copy and show it on the document camera, but each student having his or her own copy of the book to read along with, refer back to, reread, etc. will allow us to dig deeper and enjoy the book that much more! Students will benefit greatly from having their own individual book to hold, to see, to read, to experience. Your donations can make this happen!
