“Wonder” How You Can Help Students Become Avid Readers?
My students need class sets of books, like “Wonder” by R. J. Palacio. These books deal with social themes my students will find relatable, and will help spark a love of reading!

My Students
I teach a small group of students who have emotional disabilities. These children are smart and amazing, but often have difficulty expressing their feelings appropriately. Students in my classroom often become verbally or physically aggressive when they are upset. In our classroom, we spend a lot of time discussing our feelings, and using positive coping skills. We also work on basic social skills continually, because this is something all of the students are lacking. Due to their social skills deficits and emotional difficulty, most of the students do not have the opportunity to spend a full day with their general education peers.
My goal is to provide students the opportunity to grow socially and emotionally on a daily basis, so that they can mainstream successfully with their peers.
My Project
The students in my special education classroom have faced many obstacles throughout their life, and will continue to do so. Unfortunately, they are used to struggling either with academics or just trying to fit in with other kids in their peer group. In our classroom, I try to provide a safe environment where they can openly discuss their feelings and make progress toward their academic and social goals. My classroom is the one environment where the students feel like they belong.
With these new books, my students will be able to read about other kids who have also faced struggles such as not being able to read and not fitting in because of differences.
My students will be able to relate to these characters, and will have the opportunity to see how these characters successfully faced their challenges. Reading these books will not only show my students that they can overcome their own challenges, but it will also help them develop empathy for others.
