Women’s History Month: How We Move Forward Amidst Division
Help me give my students their own copy of “Sanctuary.” Students will be able to annotate in and keep their books for continued reflection. Students will be able to share their books with family and friends.
I run an after school program for our sixth grade girls. These students willingly stay at school an extra four hours every week - a big ask for middle schoolers! “Girls’ Group” was created for my students to discuss different aspects of their identity: race, sexuality, ability, socioeconomic status, etc. As we’ve had these discussions and learned how to communicate with one another about difficult topics, immigration has been become a continued point of conversation. Many of the students in our group are immigrants and are eager to share their experiences. Having a copy of this book for every girl in our group will allow every student to understand the experiences of undocumented people and the immigration process faced by many people in America. Girls' Group, and the study of "Sanctuary," will help continue to build a sense of community that we've been working on since August.
As we study "Sanctuary," students will practice their annotation and reading comprehension skills, while also discussing several SEL topics.
We are at the point of the school year where we focus on preparation for End of Grade testing, and research suggests students perform better when they're interested in the topic they're learning. Reading "Sanctuary" gives my students to practice their grade level standards in a meaningful way.
