Women Make the Moon Go Round

Help me give my students high level picture books to assist in their understanding and perspective of contributions women have made to the advancement of technology.

My Project

Our students will use high-level picture books to gain insight and perspective of the impact women had on the space race. We will study the mathematical contributions as well as the effects of those contributions throughout history. Our study will also include an in-depth look at the type of planning and strategy these women scientists and mathematicians used to calculate both the risks and rewards of putting humans into space and eventually on the moon.

Another dividend of this project will be the exposure and encouragement for girls to continue exploring careers in the math and science fields.

Using high-level picture books allows us to provide a more comprehensive picture of the struggles and challenges each woman overcame and the character they displayed, and the impact they created as a result of their success. Students will be engaged in class discussions that detail and dissect the perseverance and determination with which these women approached their projects.

Upon completing our study of these women in science and math, our students will be prepared to dive into deeper STEM-related projects with renewed ability to think creatively and confidently forge into new experiments, learning, and investigations, with the backdrop of courage and perseverance displayed by the women we studied in this project.
