As a teacher in a low-income/high poverty school district, my students are faced with numerous challenges in and out of the classroom. They attend school in one of the most impoverished neighborhoods in Baltimore City. Although they travel through blighted communities infested with drugs, rodents, violence and vacant homes; they remain steadfast in their pursuit of a fulfilling life. They are dedicated, resilient, thoughtful individuals. Though many do not come from ideal family circumstances, they are intrinsically motivated to make the best of their situations.
Our students are survivors.
Despite the many challenges they encounter, I am looking to inspire and provide my students with creative, innovative and provocative learning experiences. The community surrounding our school was once the epicenter of Baltimore’s Black Community. It is my desire to encourage our students to live their lives as the legends that used to live, visit, and perform in this historic community.
My Project
Black women are historically underrepresented in careers in mathematics. Hidden Figures is a factual account of Black female mathematicians defying the odds from the 1940s to the 1960s. Introducing my students to women that they can identify with will enable them to become more confident in their mathematical ability and inspire them to seek careers requiring strong mathematical backgrounds.
Our students should no longer be the hidden figures, but be on the front lines for evoking change in our society.
Many of our students experience social injustices on a daily basis. It is my hope that through analysis of the book and movie our students will see themselves as valuable assets to our community.
