This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

"I got it over!" A seventh grader squealed with glee. "Coach, BOOM! Did you see that!? I got it over!". The student jumped up and down twice and ran to retrieve her ball. "Good job, now see and connect the outcome, what did you do to get that ball over." As the student picked up her ball, another ball rolled towards her, which she stopped with her foot and picked up.

"Coach, this ball is kinda flat..." She said with a quizzical look.

I lifted my hand and she threw the ball towards me. I palmed the ball and felt a noticeable dip in the surface. "Yep, there goes another one," I thought. "Time to start thinking about some new volleyballs."

At a large middle school in a border town on the U.S.-Mexico Border, funds for athletics are always tight, so coaches and student-athletes have to get creative when supplies and equipment are needed.

My Project

Help give seventh and eighth grade girls the opportunity to learn the fundamentals of volleyball by providing enough volleyballs to conduct practice. Our seventh and eighth grade teams typically have 13-15 girls on each squad, with over 40 trying out for seventh grade last year. With so many players, we want to make sure we are properly equipped and have enough volleyballs to run an effective and efficient practice.

The volleyballs we currently have are several years old, they are beginning to go flat and show seems of wear and tear.

We want to be proactive and put our squads in a position to succeed. With the acquisition of fifteen new volleyballs, are squads can maintain active and dynamic practices that develop the basic skills of serving, passing, hitting, blocking, and setting, while also giving us the opportunity to run wash drills effectively and enter second and third balls to create chaos and help girls develop the decision-making skills that are crucial for successful volleyball players and citizens.
