This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My students all struggle with various disabilities. These range from learning disabilities to severe autism. Special educators are not afforded the same supplies as regular classroom teachers, even though our students have more unique needs.

My students are the funniest, brightest, best kids I know.

They face challenges in their daily lives that prevent most people from seeing who they truly are and what they're capable of, but I know what is underneath the stigma.

My students are warriors who battle disability and prejudice everyday. It takes a village to raise a child and more to raise a child with a disability. My school has a very high population of students with disabilities, specifically autism. As the saying goes, "If you know one child with autism, you know one child with autism." They are all unique people who have individualized needs. It is extremely difficult to meet all of their needs on a daily basis, but it is my life's work. My students mean the world to me, and I would do anything for them.

My Project

I have been working to create a flexible seating environment in my classroom. The purpose of flexible seating is twofold. First, to promote self-advocacy and self-efficacy in students. The ability to choose your own space and type of seating is a great way for students to develop independence. The second purpose of flexible seating is to promote different learning modalities. I have many students with varied learning styles, who learn best in different ways. Wobble chairs suited for kindergarten to first grade students will complete my collection of flexible furniture.

The ability to choose a seat that works for you, in a spot that works for you, and learn in a way that works for you, is invaluable.

The chance to know yourself well enough to know how you learn best will produce more skilled learners. Please help give my students the chance to know themselves and do their best learning.
