Our elementary school is located in Columbus, Georgia. We are a high poverty school with several high risk students attending from all over the world. The students in my classroom have special needs that require that they be pulled from the general education classroom to receive a modified curriculum. Abilities range from Autism to ADHD and from speech to occupational therapy. My goal is for each child to grow throughout the school year and become as successful as possible by achieving all of their Individualized Education Plan (IEP) goals.
Can you imagine how challenging it is for students with special needs to remain seated during whole group lecture?
My goal is to create flexible seating throughout the classroom.
My Project
The students in my special education class are very active. Some stand, some leave the room often to get breaks and others even spin in the computer chairs. But what happens when all they have is a plain ol regular chair to sit in during lecture? The answer is minimum participation. They are turning around in their seat, fiddling with pencils or markers or even poking the students next to them.
What my students need is a way to keep their bodies active and their minds focused.
The wobble stools will provide this opportunity in my classroom. Students will be able to wobble in their stools during whole group lecture while also listening and participating in the lesson.
