This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
My school is in a low income area where 99% of the school receives free or reduced-price lunch. There are approximately 800 students from Pre-K to 4th grade with 75% of them as English as their second language. The students come from backgrounds where money is not readily available and they depend on the school for survival. Most of the kids only get a meal when they come to school.
I have students who are on different medications in order to keep them calm.
With the Texas STAAR exam, the students are sitting in their seats for long periods of time. They are trying to prepare for the test and they have a hard time focusing.
Our teachers are standing for long periods of time of the day teaching and have a jam packed schedule with a 30 minute lunch and minimal restroom breaks. They have to plan three days out of the week together in order to all be on one accord. There is a good relationship with each teacher, which produces awesome teamwork.
My Project
Physical activity is one aspect of a young child's life that is important in the development of their bodies. Our students sometimes have a hard time sitting still which then makes them wiggle or move away from their seat or assigned area, which means they are off task. Their work is forgotten and they are not focused. With these wobble chairs, they can work and move at the same time and have their bodies moving and building their brain muscles at the same time. They are receiving physical activity, along with literature from the books they are reading or work they are completing as they sit on the wobble chairs.
These chairs will surely help our REACH and Structure students.
Our REACH program has students with autism. The wobble chairs will be a relaxing tool to use while they are reading or working in the library.
Our structure students are those with varying degrees of emotional disorders. The wobble chairs can give them peace and calmness in those cases where they are over stimulated or cannot focus on different tasks.
Nearly all students from low‑income households
